Tek Sen Restaurant

Tek Sen Restaurant has certainly come a long way since my last visit, back when it had not yet earned its Michelin recognition. While it was always bustling with diners, I don’t recall queues snaking outside the doors quite like this. Thankfully, my research paid off, and I managed to snag a reservation before the trip - a smart move, as the waiting crowd was intense even during lunch.

This unassuming, no-frills eatery delivers soulful tze char dishes that speak to the heart. Among the standout items were the fried roast pork, cooked with fiery chilli padi and thick black caramelised soy sauce, creating an addictive combination of heat and deep sweetness. The tangy assam prawns packed a punch of umami with every bite, and the assam tumis curry fish was a flavour bomb, with its perfectly balanced spiced and sour gravy. The sambal sweet potato leaves provided a satisfying touch of green amidst the indulgence.

Tek Sen is proof that humble food, when done right, can shine as brightly as any fine dining experience. Michelin or not, it is a Penang institution worth the effort to experience.
